Arabic Language Day “Arabic Language and Artificial Intelligence”

In collaboration with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA), on 18 December ARC-WH celebrated Arabic Language Day under the topic Arabic Language and Artificial Intelligence. Arabic Language Day is celebrated annually on 18 December, which coincides with the date of the approval of the United Nations General Assembly to include Arabic as the sixth official working language of the United Nations in 1973.

The Centre hosted the event at its headquarters in Manama, Bahrain, and invited the President of the Centre for Studies and Research at the Faculty of Art and Humanities at the Lebanese University, Professor Ghassan Murad, to discuss the key topic. During his lecture, Professor Murad discussed ways of utilizing artificial intelligence towards the enhancement and preservation of the Arabic language, Arab cultural identity, and World Heritage.

Professor Ghassan stressed the importance of paying attention to the significant acceleration in the development of technologies, including artificial intelligence technologies, to develop solutions for the challenges of preserving the Arabic language. He pointed out the strong relationship between language and fields related to computer programming, explaining that language is one of the most difficult challenges faced by artificial intelligence algorithms. The use of artificial intelligence algorithms will help in digitizing, storing and publishing Arabic texts and Arab heritage; such algorithms will help in improving the quality of translation software from and into the Arabic language. These technological advances will also assist in creating software to teach Arabic. On the whole, artificial intelligence technologies will be a critical factor in enriching Arab digital content.
