Second Workshop: Strengthening Capacities of World Heritage Professionals in the Arab Region for Cultural and Mixed Sites – French Edition

From 9 to 13 December 2019, ARC-WH and ICOMOS held the second pilot workshop, Strengthening Capacities of World Heritage Professionals in the Arab Region for Cultural and Mixed Sites, in partnership with ICCROM and IUCN, in Rabat, Morocco.

The first segment of the workshop was based on theoretical technical training aimed at enhancing the capacity-building knowledge of each heritage expert in World Heritage concepts, including World Heritage regulations and procedures, World Heritage criteria and defining Outstanding Universal Value (OUV), state of conservation and monitoring, legal framework and management, and threats faced by World Heritage sites. A session was also held in Arabic on the terminology and technical terms of the World Heritage Convention.

The second phase of the workshop was oriented towards a more practical approach and included a field visit to the UNESCO World site ‘Rabat, Modern Capital and Historic City: A Shared Heritage, where the heritage experts participated in a fictive mission to evaluate and monitor the site. Participants were then tasked with presenting their findings at the end of the workshop.

The second pilot workshop (French edition) forms part of the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) established between ARC-WH and ICOMOS signed in February 2018 and September 2019, to organise joint activities aimed at increasing the capacity-building knowledge of heritage professionals in the Arab region. The first pilot workshop (English edition) was held in December 2018 in Manama, Bahrain.
