UNESCO-UNITWIN Network on Culture in Emergencies Webinar

On 8 February 2024 the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH) in collaboration with UNESCO-UNITWIN Network on Culture in Emergencies, hosted a webinar that highlighted the critical role of culture and education in emergency situations, such as armed conflicts and disasters.

The UNESCO-UNITWIN Network on Culture in Emergencies shares objectives with the proposed UNESCO Framework for Culture and Arts Education. It emphasizes research on the role of culture and diversity in emergencies, promotes a people-centered approach to preparedness, protection, recovery, and peace-building, and actively supports the formulation and implementation of tools to safeguard culture during crises. The network also fosters engagement and cooperation among various institutions and communities of knowledge to protect and promote culture in emergency responses and peace-building efforts.

The foundational partners of the UNESCO-UNITWIN Network include institutions such as the UNESCO Chair in International Law and Cultural Heritage (UTS Sydney), UNESCO Chair in Cultural Property Law (Adam Mickiewicz University Poznań), Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (Category 2 Centre), UNESCO Regional Office for Pacific States, African Institute for International Law, Jumbunna Centre for Indigenous Research and Learning (UTS), Mexican Center for Uniform Law, and the Institute of European Studies (Berkeley).

The webinar was chaired by Dr. Mounir Bouchenaki from the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH) and featured a panel of experts from various fields, including Ms. Krista Pikkat (Director, Culture and Emergencies Entity, Culture Sector, UNESCO), Sh. Ebrahim Alkhalifa (Deputy Director, Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage), Dr. Alicja Jagielska-Burduk (UNESCO Chair in Cultural Property Law (Opole)), Dr. Jorge Sanchez Cordero (Director, Mexican Center for Uniform Law), Professor Sabine Schorlemer (African Institute for International Law), and Professor Ana Filipa Vrdoljak (UNESCO Chair in International Law and Cultural Heritage (UTS)).

This event serves as an important platform for discussing the interaction of culture, education, and peace in times of crisis.
