The 8th annual coordination meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage-related Category 2 Centres and Institutes

The Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH), represented by the deputy director Shaikh Ebrahim Bin Humood Al-Khalifa, recently participated in the 8th Annual Coordination Meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage-related Category 2 Centres (C2Cs) and Institutes, held from 31 May to 2 June 2023 in Seoul, South Korea.

The aim of the meeting was to reinforce collaborative efforts between C2Cs towards the management and conservation of World Heritage sites. Cooperation between C2Cs has been greatly affected by the global pandemic, which prevented annual coordination meetings from occurring for a period of time.

Furthermore, one of the main objectives of the coordination meeting was to foster and enhance proactive cooperation measures between these institutions, which facilitate in the implementation of policies, programmes and actions within the framework of the 1972 World Heritage Convention, the World Heritage Centre, and the Advisory Bodies.

One of the roles of C2Cs and Institutes is to provide knowledge and expertise to all stakeholders in the preservation, promotion and protection of World Heritage. C2Cs contributes to the World Heritage Strategy for capacity building, including programmes and activities established by the governing bodies of the World Heritage Convention.

Since 2010, there have been a total of seven Annual Coordination Meetings aimed at increasing collaboration efforts between C2Cs. These annual meetings allow for the sharing and exchange of expertise and the development of synergies between them.

The last annual meeting, the 7th Annual Coordination Meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage-Related C2Cs and Institutes, was held in April 2019, was hosted by the ARC-WH at its premises in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain.
