Second Training Workshop on Heritage and Environmental Impact Assessment for World Heritage sites

From 22 to 26 July, ARC-WH will be organising the second training workshop in Jbeil, Lebanon on Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for World Heritage sites, in close collaboration with the General Directorate of Antiquities in Lebanon.

In 23-27 September 2018, ARC-WH organized the first HIA/EIA workshop in Muscat, Oman in collaboration with the Ministry of Heritage and Culture. This activity brought a number of representatives and site managers from various sites (cultural, natural and mixed) from across the Arab region together, and provided them with a first opportunity to enhance their understanding of the concepts of Heritage and Environmental Impact Assessments in the context of World Heritage.

Participants in the upcoming workshop will receive extensive training in the preparation of assessing impact studies for World Heritage sites by examining various case studies, including the World Heritage sites of Byblos (Lebanon) and Anfeh, a site located in northern Lebanon. Both sites will be assessed to identify and analyse the potential impacts of development pressures.

Workshop participants are mainly from Arab countries that have requested the preparation of HIA/EIA for sites selected by the World Heritage Committee. HIA/EIAs studies are mandatory requests made by the World Heritage Committee when large-scale development, within or in close proximity to a World Heritage site is foreseen and needs to be evaluated and addressed. These studies can also provide useful information on sites that have not been inscribed on the World Heritage List; such is the case of Anfeh.
