As part of efforts to assist Arab countries preserve their natural and cultural heritage The Arab Regional Center for World Heritage organises an impact assessment workshop with the participation of Arab experts
From 17 to 19 October 2022, the Arab Regional Center for World Heritage (ARC-WH) organised a training workshop for trainers entitled “Impact assessment: in the context of World Heritage sites” online with experts and specialists from Arab countries. The workshop was held in cooperation with the World Heritage Leadership Program of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment.
Impact Assessment is one of the critical tools in identifying the impacts and their magnitude that can result from a particular project. Therefore, the importance of this workshop is based on the fact that many World Heritage sites face challenges and threats from urban development projects, in addition to the need to invest in conservation and sustainable development opportunities. The workshop aimed to provide Arab experts and specialists in the field of World Heritage with an overview of the effective use of Impact Assessment in the interest of heritage, as well as local communities and the environment, by addressing the use of the guidelines and toolkits for Impact Assessment in the context of World Heritage, definitions and case studies of World Heritage sites in Arab countries.
ARC-WH continues its mission to increase the capacities of Arab experts in the field of World Heritage as part of its strategy that aims to support and assist Arab countries in implementing the 1972 World Heritage Convention. This workshop coincides with the 10th anniversary of ARC-WH since its establishment as a Category II Centre.
