Heritage of Water: Traditional Water Systems in the Arab World

Knowledge Research Centre featured a panel discussion that discussed the ways in which water has carved and transformed the cultural heritage landscape of the region.  The focus of this event was the sustainable use of water in the region that has created phenomenal cultural landscapes in arid and difficult environments. It was also an opportunity to launch an initiative on traditional water systems in the Arab region by ARC-WH that will continue to develop and promote thematic studies and produce concrete projects in the future.

The panel discussion was then followed by an exhibition that embodied the discussion – The Heritage of Water-Oasis Landscape – featuring photographs of major categories of oases that exist in the Arab region, including the various traditional water systems deployed to ensure sustainable use of water in these manmade features and sites, often located in difficult environments.  During the 42nd Session of the World Heritage Committee, a pamphlet was also distributed that offered an insightful and detailed explanation of oases.
