Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) Workshop

UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) is a programme that combines and promotes socioeconomic development and education to improve human livelihoods, while still being environmentally sustainable towards natural ecosystems.

The Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage, in partnership with the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE), organised a MAB workshop in its headquarters in Manama, Bahrain from 14-17 January 2018. Participants were introduced to the MAB Programme as an instrument for sustainable conservation. Presentations over a span of two days then covered the nomination processes and designation process of Biosphere Reserves.

A field visit to Mashtan Island and Hawar Islands then followed. Participants observed endemic flora and fauna native to these islands.
