Conclusion of the Extended 45th session of the World Heritage Committee

The Extended 45th session of the World Heritage Committee concluded on 24 September 2023, which was held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 10 to 24 September 2023.

The Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH) participated in organizing several side events, including the launch of the publication “Exploring Cultural Heritage of the Arab Region Potential Offered for a More Balanced World Heritage List”, Fostering Heritage Collaboration between the African and Arab Worlds, screening of the winning films in the short film competition “My Heritage”, and UNESCO Chairs Forum.

During the session, a total of 42 cultural and natural heritage sites were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, three of which were from the Arab region. The ancient Jericho/Tell es-Sultan from the State of Palestine, the cultural site Djerba: Testimony to a settlement pattern in an island territory from the Republic of Tunisia, and the natural heritage site Uruq Bani Ma’arid from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
