ARC-WH and ICCROM organise Climate Action for World Heritage: Advanced Workshop on Risk Management in World Heritage Sites in the Arab States Region
Today, Sunday, 5 March 2023, the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH) witnessed the launch of the Climate Action for World Heritage: Advanced Workshop on Risk Management in World Heritage Sites in the Arab States Region in cooperation with the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), in the presence Dr. Heba Abdulaziz, Director of ARC-WH and Dr. Rohit Jigiasso, Director of the Urban Heritage, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management Project at ICCROM.
The workshop, which runs until 9 March 2023, is an extension of the capacity-building programme of Arab experts in the field of risk management leadership in the region, implemented by ARC-WH in partnership with ICCROM.
The workshop will be attended by ten experts and managers of World Heritage sites from a number of Arab countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Libya, Egypt and Yemen, where the workshop aims to provide participants with information about climate change and ways to manage its risks and mitigate and reduce its effects on cultural and natural properties.
In July 2022, ARC-WH hosted the first regional workshop on risk management in cooperation with ICCROM, attended by 19 participants, including site managers and World Heritage experts, at the end of which they presented proposals for projects that ARC-WH will consider funding for implementation in the World Heritage sites they oversee. A number of meetings were organized in collaboration with ICCROM’s World Heritage Leadership Programme and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), via video conferencing, with the participation of a number of experts who attended the workshop in July, in order to consolidate the positive results achieved during the workshop.
In order to sustain the application of risk management in World Heritage and to ensure that Arab States benefit from this vital area, ARC-WH, in cooperation with the World Heritage Leadership Programme, is carrying out follow-up and supervision activities with workshop participants in order to support them and help them apply risk management skills in World Heritage sites in the Arab region.
