Mitigation of Hurricane Impacts of Endemic and Threatened Plants of Socotra Archipelago – Phase II

In 2020, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre (WHC) and ARC-WH entered a second contract to enforce its technical support to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) of Socotra, Yemen, and implement the International Emergency Assistance financed by the UNESCO World Heritage Fund. Phase II of the project was launched in order to complete the establishment of two plant nurseries and to support the regeneration of the iconic endemic flora of the natural World Heritage Site of the Socotra Archipelago. The Archipelago was struck by three cyclones between 2015 and 2018. Additionally, the endemic fauna species have faced further pressure from continuous overgrazing and development activities. The International Emergency Assistance project is implemented in two areas – the Protected Areas of Homhil and Fermhin –which were critically damaged by the impact of natural disasters. Project Phase I concluded in 2019 with the creation of two fenced plant nurseries targeting the regeneration of the Socotran Frankincense Tree (Boswellia elongate) and the Dragon’s Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari). Phase II is foreseen to be implemented from 2020 – 2022, with a long-term vision of reaching sustainable regeneration of endemic and threatened plant species of the Socotra Archipelago. A team of four local community members will be actively involved in the regeneration of each nursery. The team will be hired and trained by ARC-WH’s Socotra Projects Coordinator in the documentation, monitoring and long-term maintenance of the nurseries, contributing to the protection of the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the World Heritage site for current and future generations.
