Incorporating Sustainable Development into the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention in the Arab States Region

 

As part of the implementation of the 2015 Policy document for the Integration of a Sustainable Development Perspective into the Processes of the World Heritage Convention and recognising the important role heritage contributes to foster equitable and sustainable development and promoting peace aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH) in collaboration with the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the Heritage Commission in Saudi Arabia and ICOMOS Saudi Arabia, will conduct a capacity building programme that will be done online and in person in June and September 2024.

The online programme will be conducted via zoom on the 10th-11th & 24th-25th June 2024 and the in-person programme will be held from 8 – 12 September 2024, in Hail, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

 

OBJECTIVE

The capacity building programme has the following aims:

  • ○Enhance the understanding and application of sustainable development and World Heritage in the Arab States and promote achieving more effective and long-term heritage conservation;
  • ○Integrate the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) Approach and the 2030 Agenda into the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in the region;
  • ○Share good practices that integrate sustainable development and World Heritage from the Arab   region with a wider audience, both regionally and internationally;
  • ○Promote the exchange of information and experience between practitioners in the region.

 

PARTICIPANTS

ARC-WH and ICOMOS are looking for applicants from 19 countries in the Arab Region, who show strong commitment to protect heritage places in the Arab Region. Interested site managers, focal points, civil society representatives, professionals and relevant stakeholders who are committed to sustainable practices in management and decision-making processes of these heritage places are invited to apply. Knowledge of the World Heritage Convention is desirable but not required.

Participants must be able to dedicate time for online training in June and carry out assignments which will be submitted in August 2024. Selected participants will need to be ready to travel to Saudi Arabia to attend the second part of the workshop in-person.

During the workshop, participants will be expected to complete group activities and assignments related to their respective heritage places or World Heritage properties. Furthermore, there will be discussions involving the review of each other’s case studies and sustainable development responses. We kindly request that only those willing to fulfill these requirements apply.

 

WORKING LANGUAGE

The working language course is English with Arabic translation.

 

WORKSHOP COST

Participation in the workshop for selected participants is free of charge.

Participants are required to cover their return flight to Hail, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Transportation from the hotel to and from the workshop venue and site visits, accommodation and lunch meals will be covered by the organizers. To facilitate the participation of a diverse group of professionals, ARC-WH will offer a limited number of scholarships for participants for participants upon request.

 

HOW TO APPLY FOR THIS WORKSHOP

The online application is to be submitted in English to ARC-WH by 20 April 2024. To complete your application, you are required to upload the following items:

○        Complete application form;

○         A passport-size photo or similar;

○         Your professional curriculum vitae (in English or Arabic; maximum two pages);

○         A copy of passport (valid for 6 months from in-person workshop start date)
