First Workshop on Integrating the Policy Document on World Heritage and Sustainable Development and the 2030 Agenda into the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in the Arab States
ARC-WH, in collaboration with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), is currently carrying out the ‘First Workshop on Integrating the Policy Document on World Heritage and Sustainable Development and the 2030 Agenda into the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in the Arab States’. The Policy, also referred to as the World Heritage Sustainable Development Policy was adopted by the UNESCO General Assembly in 2015 and highlighted the relevance of World Heritage as a means of supporting and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) .
The online training course began on 31 May and will conclude on 10 June 2021. The course aims at enhancing the understanding and application of the Policy, the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach, and the 2030 Agenda for the effective implementation of the World Heritage Convention in the Arab region.
The desired outcome of this training course is to establish a regional approach for the integration of the SDGs towards the protection and sustainable management of World Heritage Sites in order to prevent further damages and threats caused by issues such as development pressures and lack of management.
Focal Points and Site Managers from the Arab region have been invited to participate in this online workshop to increase their capacities towards a better understanding of cultural and natural heritage conservation in the framework of the SDGs towards the sustainable development and management of World Heritage Sites. Participants will also receive extensive training in the Recommendations of the HUL and how the Recommendations may be integrated into the World Heritage Convention and identify compatible SDG strategies for the enhanced protection of World Heritage Sites in the region.
