Discussion panel “Heritage and Climate Change”

In celebration of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, also known as World Heritage Day, which is celebrated each year on 18 April, the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities and the Arab Regional Center for World Heritage, in cooperation with the Bahrain Institute of Pearls and Gemstones (Danat), will organize, on Monday, April 18, at the headquarters of the Arab Regional Center for World Heritage, a discussion panel session entitled “Heritage and Climate Change.” Dr. Salman Al-Mahari, Director of Antiquities and Museums – Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, Dr. Reem Al Mealla is Head of Research, a biologist at the Danat Institute. Lucia Gomez, Consultant in Restoration – Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities and Melanie Muenzner, Consultant in Restoration – Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities will take part in this panel discussion, which will also highlight the following topics related to World Heritage:

• The impact of climate change on the Bahraini architectural heritage
• The impact of climate change on the Bahraini archaeological heritage
• The impact of climate change on Bahrain’s natural heritage
• The role of the 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention to enhance ways to protect and preserve World Heritage sites in light of the challenges of climate change on natural and cultural sites
