ARC-WH Convenes 11th Governing Board Meeting

Yesterday 21 February 2022, ARC-WH successfully convened its 11th Governing Board meeting held online. During the meeting, the board members discussed and praised several endeavours, including the six publications produced during 2021 despite the challenges presented by the global pandemic. The translation of many documents into Arabic, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) policy guidelines, was also commended.

Several projects were discussed at length, such as the Emergency Restoration Programme for Damaged Buildings in the World Heritage Site of the Old Walled City of Shiban (Yemen) funded by ALIPH, as well as the continuation of the implementation of the periodic reporting, including the main priority areas such as preparation of the impact studies and the creation and strengthening of synergies between the World Heritage field and other UNESCO Conventions and capacity building in different areas related to World Heritage.

The meeting also marked the 10th anniversary of ARC-WH since its establishment in 2012 in Manama, Bahrain. The Centre celebrated its many achievements over the last decade, including the training of more than 1,689 participants in the field of heritage conservation.

Moreover, the Governing Board also presented ARC-WH with the opportunity to brainstorm its future aspirations that it hopes to achieve in its strategic role in implementing the World Heritage Convention in collaboration with UNESCO/WHC, the Advisory Bodies and its partners.

During the meeting, it was also announced that Dr Heba Aziz had been appointed as the new director of the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage.
