A recent study: The Kingdom of Bahrain is home to the largest groups of dugongs (sea cows) in the world
A recent study conducted by the Arab Regional Center for World Heritage, in collaboration with the competent authorities, concluded that the territorial waters of the Kingdom of Bahrain carry the largest groups of dugongs in the world in terms of number and density. This study was carried out by a specialized Bahraini research team under the supervision of Dr. Abdulqader Khamis in the marine environment, with the support of international experts. The study spanned for more than three years, including extensive air and marine surveys, during which satellite images and modern technologies were employed to monitor the state of seagrass mulches, which is the main food for dugongs. The Regional Center thanks the Ministry of Works, Municipalities and Urban Planning, and the Supreme Council for the Environment for their cooperation in making this study a success.
