Ghuba Mangroves Restoration Project in Socotra – Phase I

ARC-WH, in collaboration with Friends of Soqotra (FoS) and the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) of Socotra, Yemen, concluded the “Ghuba Mangroves Restoration Project on Socotra” in 2019 The project was co-founded by Friends of Socotra (FoS) and implemented by the local Socotri NGO called Al Tamek Association for Protection of the Mangrove Tree, which was created to shed light on the importance of mangrove restoration in the Socotran Archipelago.  Mangroves are vital to Socotra’s coastal and marine habitats and provide numerous benefits to the local community, which relies on the mangroves for building materials and fire-making Due to the destructive effects of climate changes and cyclones that struck the island in 2015 and 2018, mangroves have drastically decreased Overgrazing and extensive logging have also taken their toll In light of these challenges, the restoration project aimed at restoring and rehabilitating the lost mangrove ecosystems in a targeted area in Ghuba on the north coast of Socotra to support the mitigation and minimisation of damaging coastal erosion and to enhance the wellbeing of the local community.
