ARC-WH Participation in the Regional Workshop for Developing the Waterbirds Strategy in the Arabian Peninsula
From 1 to 5 March 2020, the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in cooperation with Wetlands International and BirdLife International, organised the Regional Workshop for Developing the Waterbirds Strategy in the Arabian Peninsula, where attendees from different countries from the Arab region participated in this important event.
The workshop aimed at establishing cooperation towards better conservation procedures, documentation and monitoring techniques to protect the unique natural heritage of Arabian wetlands by sharing international, national and local expertise and initiatives. Participants also examined current findings of the regional strategy (2018-2023) for monitoring waterbirds—a vital indicator towards wetland health—in the Arabian Peninsula, developed during previous workshops in 2018.
During the workshop, ARC-WH assisted participants in waterbird identification and fieldwork methodologies and also highlighted its experiences in conducting the International Water Bird Census (IWC) for Bahrain (2017-2020), in cooperation with the Supreme Council of Environment (SCE), and discussed how the success of this case-study could be potentially implemented in other countries.
